Established in March 2017, Qingdao Qicai Seed Technology Co., Ltd. is an innovative high-tech enterprise founded by a scientific research team from Ocean University of China. Qicai operates the entire industry chain of land-based recirculating aquaculture system fisheries, including research and development, breeding, processing, sales, and services.

Currently, Qicai has more than 7,000 parental fish of murray cod aged over 8 years, rendering it the largest enterprise in the world in terms of the storage of murray cod broodstock. In 2021, Qicai passed the provincial-level qualification acceptance as the "Qingdao Murray Cod Breeding Farm". In 2022, the “Murray cod Large-scale Fully Artificial Breeding Technology and Industrial High-density Circulating Water Culture Technology” broke through by Qicai research team were recognized as internationally leading. In 2023, our bred murray cod was selected for the "National Famous and Excellent New Agricultural Products" and Qicai passed BAP Farm certification, which is the first murray cod farm in the world to obtain BAP certification. In 2024, Qicai passed BAP Hatchery certification and the national high-tech enterprise identification.

The Laixi Park of Qicai, starting production in October 2022, covers an area of 10 hectares, including 66,667 square meters of facility agricultural land, planning construction area of 40,110 square meters, including aquaculture seed industry center and aquaculture demonstration center 21,600 square meters, water and fertilizer integrated greenhouse 16,200 square meters, supporting facilities 2310 square meters and high-standard farmland and paddy fields 33,333 square meters. The Laixi Park is mainly designed as our breeding  base for murray cod, mandarin fish and salmon.

The industrial high density circulating water culture model is applied in the Laixi Park for fish breeding and the demonstration of aquaculture production. After microbial treatment, the aquaculture tail water integrated with water and fertilizer can be used for greenhouse hydroponics and soil planting. The photovoltaic facility laid in the roof of the plant serves as a supplier of renewable energy and provides part of electricity in the Laixi Park. Digital and internet of things technologies are applied to realize online monitoring of various indicators of water quality, climate and tail water, meet the automatic control of all aspects of the industrial circulating aquaculture system, and realize the inventory of biological assets and the monitoring and intelligent regulation of biological life cycle.

And Qicai has landed a similar project in Jianhe, Guizhou Province, and will popularize and copy the model across the country, aiming to promote industrial upgrading and support the rural revitalization strategy.

Development History

In 2011, Professor Qingli Gong of Ocean University of China introduced the first batch of Murray cod fry from Australia.

In March 2017, Qingdao Qicai Seed Technology Co., Ltd. was registered and established.

In June 2019, the Large-scale Fully Artificial Breeding Technology of Murraycod passed the on-site acceptance by the expert group, which for the first time realized the scale of fully artificial breeding of more than 500,000 Murraycod fries.

In May 2020, the Murray Cod Industrial Scale Artificial Breeding Technology and Industrial Fully Enclosed Circulating Water High-density Breeding Mode passed the on-site acceptance by the expert group, which for the first time realized the scale of artificial breeding of more than 2 million murray cod fries, and the aquaculture density of finished fish could reach 100-150 kg/m³ water.

In July 2021, the "948" project - "Germplasm optimization and introduction of factory recirculating water culture technology for murray cod" passed the site acceptance of the Ministry of Agriculture.

In July 2021, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Laixi Park of Qicai was held in Hetoudian Town.

In October 2021, Qicai passed the provincial qualification acceptance of "Qingdao Murray Cod Breeding Farm" and was listed.

In December 2021, the Aquatic seed Industry Branch of China Aquatic Products Circulation and Processing Association was established, and Qicai became the vice president after qualification approval.

In December 2021, Qicai was awarded the "Five Major Actions" backbone base of the National Aquatic Green and Healthy Aquaculture Technology Promotion.

In August 2022, “Murray cod Large-scale Fully Artificial Breeding Technology and Industrial High-density Circulating Water Culture Technology”, the independent research and development of Qicai, was recognized as the international leading level.

In September 2022, Qicai and Jianhe County Agricultural Investment Development LTD signed the "Investment Agreement on the construction of the whole industrial chain of Murray Cod in Jianhe County", and started the construction of the Jianhe Park.

In November 2022, Qicai was approved for the registration of "Outbound Aquatic Animal Farm and Transfer Farm".

In April 2023, Qicai signed a strategic cooperation agreement with CNFC OVERSEAS FISHERIES CO., LTD. in Beijing.

In May 2023, Tao Huaiying, director of the Department of Planning and Finance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and his delegation visited Qicai to investigate the development of fishery facilities.

In August 2023, the murray cod cultured by Qicai was selected into the list of "National Famous and Excellent New Agricultural Products".

In October 2023, Qicai passed the BAP certification, becoming the first murray cod farm in the world to pass the BAP certification.

1. Fry sales

Fully artificial breeding Murray Cod fry: 5.0-7.0cm size, at least 50,000 at a time.

2.Commercial fish sales

0.8-1.5 kg Murray cod: mainly suitable for fresh market and catering industry;

Murray cod above 1.5 kg: mainly used for processing aquatic products (such as children's supplementary food, prepared vegetables, etc.).

3.Cooperation on smart agriculture in which agriculture, fishery and light are integrated

This model organically combines agricultural planting, fishery breeding, photovoltaic power generation and digital agriculture to promote the sound and sustainable development of the industry, aiming at the integrated development of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries.
