Qingdao Daily | Put a "Chinese core" on foreign fish

Introduction

Recently, the first batch of Australian murray cod loaded with "Chinese core" started customs exit procedures.

In 2011, through the support of the "948" project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Professor Gong Qingli of the College of Fisheries of Ocean University of China and his team introduced the first batch of murray cod fry from Australia. Through unremitting research and hard work, the team has achieved major technological breakthroughs, and successfully achieved large-scale artificial breeding of morray cod for the first time in the world, filling the gap in the field.

Why did a "foreign fish" settle down in a small village in Qingdao and "open branches and scatter leaves" here?

Introduction

The light was dim and the water rippled. Into the aquaculture demonstration center of Qingdao Qicai Seed Technology Co., LTD., Yangjiatun Village, Hetou dian Town, Laixi City, different specifications of circular aquaculture ponds are neatly arranged, and the dense fish fry in the pool are happy to swim - this is the murray cod from Australia.

Murray cod, also known as Aussie spot, dragon pattern spot, the fish body is spindle shaped, the back of the body is yellow black or dark green, the belly color is light yellow white, and the two sides of the body have beautiful patterns. It is a warm water fish, is the largest individual freshwater fish in Australia, can live for hundreds of years.

"Murray cod is a high-quality freshwater fish native to Australia, with high nutritional and economic value, which is favored by local people." According to Gong Qingli, chairman of Qingdao Qicai Seed Technology Co., LTD., and professor of the College of Fisheries of Ocean University of China. In 2011, through the support of the "948" project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, he and his team introduced the first batch of fish fry from Australia, and carried out the breeding of parent fish through technical means such as group breeding while constantly tackling the key breeding technology.

After unremitting exploration, in 2017, the selected parent fish finally reached partial sexual maturity. In order to achieve full artificial breeding, the team hired highly paid Australian experts to guide the breeding of murray cod. However, Australia only achieved semi-natural breeding conditions, and did not achieve a breakthrough in the field of artificial breeding, and the cooperation ended in failure. "Millions of dollars have been paid for expert fees, but there is still no breakthrough." Gong Qingli introduced that since then, the team decided to overcome the murray cod artificial breeding technology on its own to fill the gaps in international related fields.

After two years of hard work, in 2019, the team finally made a major breakthrough: the world's first time to achieve large-scale artificial breeding of murray cod, and its self-developed Large-scale Artificial Breeding Technology of Murray Cod and Industrial High-density Circulating Water Culture Technology were assessed as the international leading level. Since then, this "foreign fish" has finally been installed with "Chinese core" and completely realized "made in China".

Culture

"China has a rich variety of farmed marine fish, but the freshwater fish species are relatively simple and lack of precious fish species, and there is an urgent need for some high-grade freshwater fish species." According to Zhang Xianliang, former president of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, more than 80 percent of China's 1.4 billion people live inland, and freshwater fish eaters still dominate. Therefore, the arrival of murray cod has not only greatly enriched the dining table of Chinese people, but also opened up a new track for aquaculture with its industrial high-density circulating water culture technology.

"Our conventional culture density is maintained at 100-200 kg per cubic meter of water, up to 320 kg, which is more than 6 times the average level at home and abroad. A 30-cubic meter pond can produce 10,000 kilograms of murray cod per year, with an output value of 500,000 yuan, and the culture efficiency is 100 times that of ordinary pond, which can save a lot of land." Liu Ming, general manager of Qingdao Qicai Seed Technology Co., LTD., introduced that traditional farming is "relying on the sky to eat", and the risk of land-based industrial circulating aquaculture system is relatively controllable, so the project has also attracted the attention and investment of multiple capital.

Qingdao Qicai Seed Technology Co., LTD. is an innovative high-tech enterprise founded by a scientific research team from Ocean University of China. Qicai operates the entire industry chain of land-based recirculating aquaculture system fisheries, including research and development, breeding, processing, sales, and services. The Laixi Park of Qicai, covers an area of 10 hectares, including 66,667 square meters of facility agricultural land, including aquaculture seed industry center and aquaculture demonstration center, water and fertilizer integrated greenhouse, supporting facilitiesand high-standard farmland and paddy fields. The Laixi Park is mainly designed as our breeding  base for murray cod, mandarin fish and salmon.

The original site of the aquaculture factory of the Qicai Seed is an abandoned mining area. After the Qicai Seed settled down, the water from the mine was taken up and treated as industrial circular aquaculture water supply. At the same time, the discharged aquaculture tail water was transported to the outdoor smart greenhouse to grow crops, basically realizing the full recycling of water resources.

Export

In the modern breeding workshop, the reporter saw that each equipment performed its duties and operated in an orderly manner. "Through a whole set of processes, water resources can be recycled, the daily water exchange is only about 2%, the tail water discharge is very small, and the ecological cycle farming is truly realized." Liu Ming introduced that this set of land-based circulating water technology is at the leading level in China.

At present, the first phase of the plant can raise 200,000 adult fish per year, after the second phase of the project is put into use, it can raise 500,000 to 600,000 adult fish, and the scale is expected to reach 4 million to 5 million in the future, enabling the promotion of "seed industry revitalization".

Where will the murray cod, which have achieved factory full-cycle breeding, swim next?

"At present, we have selected and bred more than 7,000 8 to 12 years old murray cod, fish fry sold all over the country, farmers do not have to rely on imports." Our commercial fish have also been successfully sold to cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen." Liu Ming told reporters that the industrial farming of murray cod has sorted out a set of "Qingdao model", which is being replicated and promoted to other provinces and cities in China.

"We have achieved the replication and promotion of this model in Jianhe County, Guizhou Province, and are now accepting the project, and plan to put it into production in April." Parks in Hubei, Hebei and other places have also entered the planning stage and are now stepping up. In the future, we will successively promote a number of industrial high-density circulating aquaculture bases across the country to promote the integrated development of 'breeding and propagation'." Liu Ming said.

From the beginning of the research, the team has been determined to sell "made in China" murray cod to the world, and now this dream is within reach.
