Scientific and technological innovation has become a key word in the recently released No. 1 central document for 2024. The document proposed to strengthen agricultural science and technology support. It clearly proposed to speed up the selection, breeding and promotion of the production of urgently needed independent fine species, promote the modernization and upgrading of facility agriculture and so on.

The total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery in Shandong Province ranks first in the country, and is the first agricultural province among the top four provinces in the economic ranking, which can be described as an excellent window to observe the new trend of agriculture.

In recent years, local governments at all levels in Shandong have insisted on scientific and technological innovation as the core of high-quality agricultural development, accelerated the implementation of key core agricultural technologies, and continuously improved the level of agricultural scientific and technological innovation. Taking Qingdao as an example, it took the lead in the country to issue the "Qingdao Facility Agriculture Modernization Promotion Action Implementation Plan (2023-2025)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan"), which clearly focuses on the "four new" and "five modernizations". We will carry out ten major projects, including the modern plant planting project with energy-saving and suitable models, the animal husbandry project with efficient and intensive modern facilities, and the fishery project with ecological healthy modern facilities.

China has a population of more than 1.4 billion, so it is very important to solve the problem of food supply. In addition to arable land, China has more than 4 billion mu of forest land, nearly 4 billion mu of grassland and a large number of rivers, lakes and seas and other resources, the scientific development of these resources can broaden food sources, enrich food categories, and meet market demand. The No. 1 central document proposes to "support deeper offshore aquaculture", "actively promote the factory recycling aquaculture model", "establish a big agricultural concept, a big food concept, and expand food sources through multiple channels".　　

In the vision of the Great Food view, food is sought from both the land and the sea. In the face of the blue granary of the ocean, scientific and technological innovation is essential to cultivate the sea and fish, increase the total amount of food, and realize the sustainable use of fishery resources. In June 2023, the National Modern Facility Agriculture Construction Promotion Meeting held in Qingdao Laixi stressed that the focus of facility fisheries is to accelerate the development of factory healthy aquaculture, vigorously promote deeper offshore marine aquaculture, and improve resource utilization rate and unit output rate.

Seed industry is the foundation of modern agriculture and fishery development. Up to now, there are 21 national marine pasture demonstration zones in Qingdao, accounting for about 1/8 of the country. There were 9 state-level demonstration zones for healthy aquaculture and ecological development, and the number of demonstration zones dominated by production and business units remained the first in the country. It has led the cultivation of 59 new species of aquatic products approved by the state, accounting for about 21% of the national total, and the research and development capacity of aquatic breeding is leading the country. At present, Qingdao Blue Seed Industry Research Institute is promoting the focus on "three fish, one shrimp and one shellfish", carrying out research on the cultivation of excellent species and the artificial breeding technology of strategic emerging species, and cracking the problem of "card neck" of aquatic seedlings.

      According to reports, the model saves land and water, and has high output efficiency. Taking a standard breeding pond with a diameter of 6 meters as an example, the annual output is about 10,000 kilograms, which is equivalent to a high-standard pond of 5 to 10 acres. The project adopts industrial circulating aquaculture, and the recycling rate reaches 95%. And the tail water is not wasted, after three stages of precipitation and fermentation, will be used in the park's water and fertilizer integrated greenhouse, lotus pond, shrimp paddy field and other agricultural planting projects, become the best nutrition for green agriculture, to achieve local consumption.

      More importantly, since the first introduction of Murray cod fry from Australia in 2011, after more than ten years of excellent selection, Qicai seed has stored more than 7,000 8-12 years old Murray cod broodstocks, becoming the largest enterprise in the world, and fully realized the domestic replacement of Murray cod frys.
