Ask for food from the sea and focus on the revitalization of the seed industry

Five years ago, when the General Secretary visited Guangdong, he called for Shantou and Zhanjiang to be taken as important development poles to build a modern coastal economic belt. This time in Zhanjiang, the General Secretary visited four places. From Marine fisheries and ecological protection, to port operation and water resources allocation, from sea farming, husbandry and fishing, to making up for shortages, each of these places has a bearing on people's well-being and carries strategic considerations.

Visit the base: Ask for food from the sea and focus on the revitalization of the seed industry

On the morning of October 10, the first stop of the General Secretary visited the southern base of the mariculture Seed Project of the National 863 Program in Donghai Island, Zhanjiang City.

This base is a comprehensive research and development platform integrating aquatic feed, seedlings and aquaculture. The aquatic products involved include South American White Prawn, golden pomfret and grouper.

Developing Marine fisheries is not only an important part of building China into a maritime power, but also an important part of ensuring food security. At the Central Rural Work Conference in 2017, the General Secretary put forward a request to establish a big agriculture concept and a big food concept, to seek heat and protein from cultivated land, grassland, forest, ocean, plants, animals and microorganisms, and to develop food resources in an all-round and multi-channel way. At last year's Central Rural Work Conference, the general Secretary further emphasized that "eating" is not only about consuming grain, but also about meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, fish, mushrooms and bamboo shoots. We will promote the development of land-based and far-reaching Marine aquaculture and fishing farms and expand the space for agricultural production.

Seeds, the "chips" of agriculture, are also the key to high-quality development of Marine fisheries. The base the general secretary visited on the same day is the largest parent breeding base of Penaeus white shrimp in China and the national demonstration field of modern fishery seed industry. The seed project has been included in the National 863 program, that is, the national high technology research and development program.

It is worth mentioning that the General Secretary launched an inspection tour to Hainan on the same day last year, and the first stop was also to see seeds. In Yazhou Bay Seed Laboratory in Sanya, the general Secretary pointed out that we should focus on ensuring food security and supply of important agricultural products, realize the seed industry technology self-reliance, independent control of seed sources, and use Chinese seeds to ensure China's food security.

From last year to Sanya to see the south propagation of scientific research and breeding, to this time to Zhanjiang to see the mariculture and breeding, conveyed the General Secretary's ardent concern for the revitalization of seed industry.
